"What's my job?" Year 7 Careers event
Today our Year 7 students took part in the ‘What’s my job?’ careers event. For an hour they were given the opportunity to question five different mystery visitors about aspects of their work in order to try and guess what their job was, this was followed by a session where our guests revealed their job and spoke to them about what they do, the highs and lows of their work and the qualifications/training/experience required to do it.
We were lucky enough to be joined by Nicola, a firefighter from Kent Fire and Rescue, Joe (a former Thomas Aveling student!) who is now a pilot, Lucy and Kathryn who are Youth Justice Practitioners for Kent Youth Justice, Fiona from Dovetail games that produce computer games and Karl from Clockwork Moggy who works with digital marketing.
The aim of the session was to begin to introduce students to the different possibilities that exist for future careers. The students were incredibly engaged and there was a constant flow of questions. The interest was definitely piqued in our students, with one asking: “What age can people start working with you?”, the answer given was “16 if in an apprenticeship.” and the student immediately replied “I will see you in five years!”
We at Thomas Aveling and the Beyond School’s Trust extend our sincere thanks to our guests for giving us their time and experience, our students take so much from these events and the involvement of every single volunteer is invaluable.
