How to apply for a place in Year 7

The following is a list of important dates for new Year 7 students attending from September 2010:

The following information relates to requests for Admission to Year 7 in September 2010.

The Thomas Aveling School, as a Foundation Technology College, is able to take students without reference to ability or aptitude.

  1. Fill in the Medway Common Application Form provided by the Local Authority (LA).  The Thomas Aveling School will appear in the list of schools, with all the other schools in the area.  We do not have a separate application form.
  2. The dates for the 2009 Open Sessions at The Thomas Aveling School are:

    Thursday 8th October 2009:  6.00-8.30 pm
    Tuesday 3rd November 2009:  9.00-10.30 am
    Wednesday 4th November 2009:  9.00-10.30 am
    Thursday 5th November 2009:  9.00-10.30 am
  3. Make sure the Application form is sent back to your child's primary school by 18th November 2009.
  4. In the first instance, the LA will forward to this school a list of applicant's names whose parents have placed The Thomas Aveling School as a preference. The Governing Body Admissions Authority (GBAA) has an over-riding duty to comply with parent's requests and will carefully consider every application received.In an effort to provide parents with clear and transparent guidance with regard to the admissions process, your attention is drawn to Appendix 1, which clarifies and explains important information relating to applications.

We have places for 180 students in each year group. If we receive more than 180 applications for places, then the following criteria will be applied:

  1. Children in public care
  2. Current family association, i.e. an older sibling who is on the roll of the school when the application is made, living in the same household, who must still be attending at the point of entry in September 2010.
  3. Nearness of children-s homes to The Thomas Aveling School

Letters notifying parents as to whether their child has a place will be posted on 1st March 2010.
