The Poetry Games - Truth or Dare Competition!

Thomas Aveling students took part in the Young Writers’ Poetry Competition as part of the annual celebration for National Poetry Day.

115 entries were received and sent off for The Poetry Games - Truth or Dare Competition, which asked students to write a poem about a topic they were either passionate about (Team Truth) or something they would like to challenge (Team Dare).

Thomas Aveling also ran a house competition where each house was given house points for every entry submitted. The highest number of entries came from Resolute with 50 entries, followed by Cavalier in 2nd place, Victory 3rd and Achilles 4th.

After the entries were received it was clear there were some outstanding poets in school and Mrs Peace and Mrs Wybourn decided to reward the top four poets with a special Waterstones gift voucher.

A copy of the winning poems will be displayed in the school Library.

Well done to the winners who were;

1st place – Louise – DLUV
Louise chose to be part of Team Truth and wrote a poem about her passion for karate.

2nd place – Jason – KWIA
Jason chose to be part of Team Dare and challenged Homelessness in society.

3rd place – Jamie – LROR
Jamie chose to be part of Team Dare and challenged the reasons behind the Grenfell Tower fire.

4th place – Farhana - SBEV
Farhana chose to be part of Team Dare and challenged how we are treating the environment.

Mrs Wybourn said ‘The level and number of entries received are the best we have ever had! Choosing the winners in school was a tough decision as so many students had dedicated so much time in developing their poems. Good luck to everyone involved in the national competition, let’s hope we have a national winner!’
