D of E BRONZE - One STEP Closer, figuratively and literally.

Thomas Aveling’s Duke of Edinburgh Bronze participants set off on another weekend of camping and hiking the Kent Countryside between Bexon Lane Scout site and Teynham Scout site. On arrival Friday evening, the participants were eager to set up camp and catch up on a few games of Man Hunt. Saturday morning arrived early as the birds woke us up at 5:00am. The group got straight to work disassembling their tents, eating breakfast and preparing their kits for the long walk ahead. Both the TA Ladies and TA Gents teams set out on their walk between 7:00 and 8:00 am! (The best part, they needed no teacher encouragement, So Mr. Coley and I enjoyed a nice cup of coffee and watched from afar, already proud of the accomplishments of our group). Both Teams arrived safely at Teynham Scout hut by 16:30 and quickly found games to play out in the sunshine including a water fight to cool off. Sunday brought on new challenges, sore feet, shoulders, and a new route to walk. However, that did not dampen their spirits. Setting off by 8:00am back to Bexon Lane each group were eager to complete the day.

The weekend was filled with laughter, frustration and overcoming challenges as a group. They were lost and then not. They had to problem solve and share ideas to overcome obstacles.

There are not enough adjectives available to describe how proud I am of all of these students. They are all champions having showed dedication and perseverance through the entire weekend.

I would also like to thank Mr. Coley for helping me and enjoying our student scavenger hunts as we met them at checkpoints. Thank you also to those who thought positive about the weather as again Mother Nature granted us a beautiful weekend. Thank you to the parents who support their children to get involved in the D of E program and to the staff and volunteers at Copperhouse for your support leading up to and over the weekend.

I am happy to pass on that both groups have passed the Expedition portion of their Bronze award and will be completing the other components through this term.
