The final of the Thomas Aveling Bake Off 2017 – The Showstopper

The Thomas Aveling Bake Off has gone from strength to strength and now in its second year we saw teams from each of our four houses, battling it out to be crowned this year’s Star Bakers.

After the earlier Technical Challenge (sausage rolls and homemade Flaky Pastry) The Resolute team of Mrs Holdsworth and Jenna (JHOR) held a narrow lead going into the final, the Show Stopper challenge.

The theme for the Showstopper Challenge this year was ‘St. David’s Day’ and all five teams delivered superbly planned and well executed entries.

Victory House baked a gluten free Chicken and Leek pie, Resolute came up with a Welsh Dragon topped three tier cake iced with ‘St David’s Day in Welsh, Cavalier exploited Mrs Williams PE teacher credentials by making a ‘6 nations’ cake and cupcake platter and Achilles recreated the Welsh dragon emblem on their fantastic cake.  Mr Preston and Miss Archer, who entered under the team name ‘Deputy Dawgs’ made a chicken, leek and Caerphilly cheese pie decorated with a handmade pastry daffodil.

To add to the pressure for our contestants, our local newspaper sent along a photographer to capture the baking in action and we look forward to the coverage of our Thomas Aveling Bake Off appearing in an upcoming edition of the Medway Messenger.

Miss Mawn, Subject Leader of Food Technology and Bake Off organiser said:

“It was good to see staff and students working together, all the teams showed their skills and creativity in producing their baked products and brilliant to see that our two Deputy Head Teachers wanted to be part of the competition, forming their own team!  The standards were high and the teams worked well to produce their finished products. There were only 3 marks difference between the 3 top teams but with their lead from the technical challenge Resolute were in the end triumphant producing their tri coloured sponge, white ganache decorated with a dragon, handmade iced daffodils and decorated with the wording Dydd Gŵyl Dewi; a true show stopper!  Thanks also go to Mr Jackson, and recently retired staff member Mrs Clarke for their professional judging; they were Thomas Aveling’s answer to Paul and Mary!”
