A visit is being arranged to Krakow in Poland, site of the notorious Auschwitz Concentration Camp.  This trip offers the opportunity to see things that students will remember for the rest of their lives.  The whole experience of this trip will not only help them academically, but also socially, which is often difficult to achieve in a normal classroom setting.

We are planning for this visit to take place over 4 days during March 2008.  Sites visited will include Krakow old town, the only city in Poland not bombed by Germany in World War 2; the indoor market; the wartime Jewish Ghetto used extensively in the filming of Schindlers List, together with the Emalia factory, where Schindler saved so many of his Jewish workforce.  The highlight of the trip will be a visit to Auschwitz Concentration Camp, where between 1.5 and 2 million people were murdered.  Here, students will see cellblocks containing relics, in addition to the gas chambers and crematoria.  They will also visit nearby Birkenau Concentration Camp where up to 60,000 people were killed each day in the gas chambers.  Krakow Castle will also be visited and there will be some time for shopping.

The cost of this visit will be in the region of £400, dependant on the number of places filled.

This will include:

  • Transport to and from the airport;
  • Return flights to Krakow;
  • Insurance;
  • Executive coach travel;
  • 2 hotel accommodation;
  • 3 meals a day, students will be issued money to purchase their own lunch and evening meals will be taken in restaurants to allow them to sample local food and culture;
  • Tour Director 24 hours per day;
  • Entrance to all sites mentioned.

If you are interested in your son/daughter taking part in this visit please contact the History department for more information.
