The History Department aims to involve students in methods of historical enquiry and to encourage an appreciation of the importance of History as a means of understanding societies, individuals and their actions. Students will also develop an understanding of the ways in which the ideas and actions of individuals and societies have shaped today's world.
The work students complete will include the following aspects.
- Understanding of chronology.
- Understanding of historical evidence.
- Understanding of the detection of bias.
- Appreciation of continuity and change, cause and consequence, similarity and difference.
- Understanding of historical empathy, which involves students in making an informal appreciation of the opinions and situation of people of the past.
- Ability to analyse and evaluate historical interpretations.
- Ability to pose historical questions and make informed conclusions.
- Ability to recall, select, analyse data, present relevant information and communicate ideas.
- Appreciation of the growing contribution of science and technology to the rapidly changing and developing world.
