Attendance Matters

All research shows that there is a clear link between high achievement and good attendance so it is really important that Thomas Aveling students attend school every day!

Nothing is more depressing than having to catch up on missed work and it is very easy to fall behind. We have a number of support strategies in place to help ensure that all students can achieve their full potential, including:

If we have not been given a reason for absence the Assistant Director of Learning for your daughter or son will contact you. Please let her know if there are issues that are impacting on attendance so that we can support you and your child. If we do not hear from you Mrs Burnett, our Home School Support Worker, may visit you or your child at home to discuss any worries or support we can put in place;

Celebrating good attendance – we celebrate students’ good attendance through the House System;

You will be informed by letter when attendance dips below 95% in the first instance. Should there be further concern you will be invited into school to discuss the issues and, if necessary, the Attendance Advisory Practitioner (AAP) will be informed. Parents and children may be invited to an Attendance Clinic where the AAP and key support staff meet with parents and carers to discuss ways forward to improve attendance and punctuality. You may also request an appointment – it is a two way dialogue!;

If students are late for school then they are required to make up the time with their Director of Learning at break time.

Penalty Notices – In line with all Education Authority practise we must advise parents/carers that a Penalty Notice may be imposed where unauthorised holiday leave is taken and for those students who have had 15 or more unauthorised absences.

Holidays – The holiday form is no longer available as the Governors have not authorised holiday absence for any student during term time since September 2007. Only in exceptional circumstances such as a family bereavement or participation in a representative sport will authorised leave will be granted. In these circumstances, parents should write directly to the Headteacher.

Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Assistant Director of Learning if you would like to discuss attendance issues further.

Thomas Aveling School has been singled out for praise after launching a new Let’s Get Cooking club for young people, using money raised by HealthWhole through The Health Lottery.

The club has been awarded a Golden Spoon gong from Let’s Get Cooking after using cooking to help to prepare sixth formers about to head off to university by teaching them how to make healthy meals at home.

Catherine Dacey, who helps run the Let’s Get Cooking club, said: “ The benefits to members have been a real mixture of financial, health and social aspects. I’d say one of the biggest lessons that will stay with them has been seeing how they can feed and fill four people for less than £3. The club has been a huge success in so many different ways”

Maggie Sims senior manager at Let’s Get Cooking, the country’s largest network of healthy cooking clubs, said: “Using food and cooking is a natural way to bring people together. With Thomas Aveling School, we’ve seen first-hand how it can help people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities, build relationships and make new friends.

“Learning how to cook a nutritious meal from scratch and on a budget, can make such a difference to people’s health, and it’s so much more fun when you can do it alongside others.

Thomas Aveling School attended the national ceremony in London where special prizes for the overall Golden Spoon winners were presented by keen cook and teaching champion Kate Bellingham, best known for hosting Tomorrow’s World and Children’s ITV programme, the Big Bang.

The winner was chosen from a series of criteria such a originality of design and best group work.

Each of the groups took the challenge with excellent attitude, had lots of fun and learned a lot about designing and marketing a product (and about how to slay dragons!)

We aim to publish the news by 1600 GMT on the News Day, so please save this page as a favourite and return to it later. In the meantime, take a look at what our students produced last year.
