Citizenship

Citizenship aims to empower individuals to become active members of their community whether that is where they study, live or eventually work. It is a fundamental element of the Thomas Aveling School it runs through the taught curriculum and the activities students are encouraged to involve themselves in.

Students receive discreet Citizenship lesson within PSHE where they learn about what it means to live and have an active role in their local, national and global communities. They also receive elements of Citizenship through their curriculum subjects, through a range of activities on offer during the school day and in after school clubs and through the extended schools programme which also runs during the holidays.

Below are examples and some brief details of just a few of the extra curricular activities on offer.

  • Walk Tall Chat n Chill - this is for years 7 and 8 and in term 6 we offer the club to the year 6 students from Warren Wood. This helps them get to know some students in Thomas Aveling in preparation for their transfer to their secondary school. The club offers the chance to meet new people, play games, make and eat different types of food and relax while doing fun things!
  • Eco-1club - this is for students in years 7, 8 and 9. It involves looking after our world through science and learning about the practicalities of caring for our environment. Last year the students began growing flowers and herbs and then they sold them at the end of the term at a massive sale.
  • The Samba Music Group is open to students from years 7 - 13. Come along to make cool music.
  • Street Dance Group - open to years 7 - 9. Keep fit and stay funky by learning some new dance moves!
  • Media club - open to all students. The members of this club are going to make a DVD to introduce new students to the school.
  • Formula 1 Radio-Control Car Club - open to anyone keen on cars.
  • Homework club is open every evening for anyone who wants to complete their homework before they go home and who might want a little bit of support with it.
