Diggin’ The Past, Thomas Aveling’s after school club for budding archaeologist and palaeontologists welcomed an expert speaker to only it’s second meeting. Andrew Mayfield, the community archaeologist for Kent & Medway, was at school to give his support and encouragement, and pass on his good wishes for the newly formed club. He was also visiting in his role as director of an archaeological dig at nearby Shorne Woods, a dig in which the members of the club will soon be participating in.

Students will be able to gain first hand experience as an ‘earth detective’, as they help to uncover the secrets of the medieval manor house known as Randall Manor.

Mr Mayfield also treated the students to a handling session, with artefacts ranging from the Roman period through to Victorian times that included bone, pottery and glass. He commented on how knowledgeable and enthusiastic the students were, especially during a brief question & answer session. Mr Mayfield has promised to provide Diggin’ The Past with a SWAP Kit: a box of real and replica artefacts that the club can use as a learning resource.

In addition, he said that he is looking forward to working with the students at Shorne and other future activities.

Note: any student (or staff) who wishes to know more about the club should speak to Mr Webb, all welcome.
