EDEXCEL BTEC IN ART AND DESIGN Level 2 (KS4) and Level 3 (KS5) The BTEC First Certificates in Design generates valuable links to industry, giving students the opportunity to meet and respond to practising artists and craftspeople. The course introduces students to a wide range of 2D and 3D disciplines within Art and Design. Students produce evidence for a range of specific units which will provide them with an understanding of how to research a given brief, plan and prepare design ideas, experiment with a variety of media, produce a final outcome and display their work effectively. In Key Stage 4 the course is designed so as students produce evidence that covers all required assessment objectives by responding to centre set design briefs. Within these set briefs students will be given opportunities to personalise their work and develop their own independent style. The candidates will experience a wide range of projects including Ceramics, Fine Art and Printmaking. In addition to these, students will also learn how to effectively display their work via traditional and contemporary methods. In order to succeed in the course, the completion of quality homework tasks is imperative and students are expected to meet the given deadlines. Students will be responsible for keeping their sketch books safe and up to date as they will contain the majority of evidence for assessment. All students are strongly advised to regularly attend after school sessions to help support and enhance their achievement. In Key Stage 4 work is graded to a Pass (4 C's GCSE), Merit (4 B's GCSE), Distinction (4 A's GCSE) and Distinction* (4 A* GCSE). In Key Stage 5 students currently have the opportunity to study for either 1 AS/A2 or 2 AS/A2. The Level 3 course is graded very much like the Level 2 course, the difference being that a Pass equates to a D/E a Merit B/C and a distinction an A grade. This course is aimed at building upon the skills they have developed in Key Stage 4 making student more independent, creative, and imaginative. Throughout the course students will be given opportunities to meet university students therefore gaining an understanding of the variety of career paths that are available to them.
